Position Overview

This position is responsible for being the human link between MC’s immigration legal team and our immigration clients. In support of Department of Justice-Accredited Representatives (DOJs), the Paralegal/Department of Justice-Accredited Representative will complete tasks associated with immigration cases, including client interfacing, records retention, and document processing. If needed by the agency, the Paralegal/Department of Justice-Accredited Representative may obtain partial DOJ Accreditation and proceed to a representative role. The Paralegal/Department of Justice-Accredited Representative is part of the front reception team. 

Duties and Responsibilities (Case Management, Legal Services, & Communications)

  • Provides general support to walk-in or phone-in clients concerning agency’s services and its referral network. 

  • Refers clients (existing, potential, and walk-ins) to proper community resources. 

  • Keeps clients informed by maintaining contact and communicating case progress. 

  • Translates documents written in a Spanish for immigration submissions. Interprets for client appointments. 

  • Communicates and advocates needs of clients to staff and other community partners, including making and receiving phone calls, drafting and sending of emails, and mail correspondence, and English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpreting for meetings or appearances before administrative bodies, as requested. 

  • Under supervision, assists in cases involving the immigration legal needs of clients. 

  • Keeps cases organized by establishing and organizing files; inputting intake information; monitoring clients’ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) appointments; meeting deadlines; documenting client services; and confirming case status with DOJ Representatives. 

  • Enhances submissions to USCIS by organizing evidence, making copies, and creating shipping labels. 

  • After obtaining DOJ Accreditation, oversee cases, provide legal counsel, and provide direct representation to clients before the Department of Homeland Security, USCIS. 

  • Maintains and updates cases using the case management system, including opening and closing new cases, updating and documenting client interactions and internal case status, and tracking deadlines. 

  • Compiles statistical information and assists in submission of program reports. 

  • Conducts legal research including obtaining statistics and information, reviewing government-based websites related to immigration law or policy, and analyzing any other research issue deemed relevant. 

  • Drafts documents, including the preparation of forms, statements, affidavits, cover letters, and appeals, as well as translating from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English of any related documents. 

  • Prepares for USCIS interviews, including, general file review and summary, English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpreting, and attendance at both interviews and hearings when necessary. 

  • Communicates the intake process and services to interested community members and obtains case information from clients. Relay eligibility and, if applicable, legal facts and advice given by other Representatives to clients. 

  • Assists other staff in communicating program services to the community at large and represents MC at community meetings, events, and functions, when assigned. 

  • Prepares and conducts presentations when appropriate (Immigration 101, Know Your Rights, etc.). 

  • Works in collaboration and maintain communications with other partner agencies to promote access to immigration legal services.  

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational training and reading professional publications.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Associates degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience. 

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication skills in English and Spanish, including the ability to interact with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds. 

  • A minimum of one-year of related work or internship experience. 

  • Must have good moral character to apply for DOJ Accreditation. 

  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite. 

  • Skills in organization, time management, and problem-solving.

Position Overview

Looking for a new addition to our work family! Our Front Services Coordinator will create a welcoming environment of acceptance and kindness for newcomers. We are searching for an individual with a heart for serving immigrants and a collaborative approach to supporting a team. It is required that candidates be bilingual.

The Multicultural Coalition serves 1,500 newcomers each year with legal representation and community resources. We strive to be a "welcoming grandmother" to families who are new to Central Nebraska.
